In 2006 it was announced that all its members would meet, with the late vocalist Layne Staley being replaced by William DuVall, former member of Comes with the Fall, and the release of a new studio album, entitled Black Gives Way to Blue, which was released on September 29, 2009. Relying on singer Layne Staley’s depressive view of drugs and death, and guitarist Jerry Cantrell’s subtle, worked-up metal chords, Alice In Chains quickly rose to the top, becoming one of the most established and widely accepted bands in the audience.

Part of the key to their success was the combination of that sense of indifference that grunge is supposed to have with the strength of metal and an exclusive and characteristic harmonic play in the voices. With a name that in itself denotes quite a lot of pessimism and with a heavier and more heavy metal-oriented sound than contemporary grunge bands, although within this movement, Alice in Chains managed to emerge from the Seattle scene to become one of the most important bands of so-called alternative rock, selling some 14 million records in the United States.
